Description

Part of a character art series based on the wonderful EXPANSE novels by James S.A. Corey. Soon to be seen on the Syfy channel. But before it is, and the TV casting choices have a chance to ingrain themselves, I'd like to get some ideas out there for what I think the main characters REALLY look like. Especially the crew of the Rocinante.

The Expanse and the character Amos Burton were created by James S.A. Corey -who is not actually a person. James S.A. Corey is actually two people: Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck. Read the books if you haven't. Best space opera since Firefly or Cowboy Beebop.

This art is built on a photobash which was retouched/repainted. Borrowed from the likeness of actor Brad William Henke, who would make a perfect Amos. Thought he was great in Justified and Fury. Maybe it's a cheap device, but I usually cast the books I read. In my brain, real actors and people deliver a more nuanced and substantial performance than vague faces conjured from scratch. IMO the actor chosen to play Amos on the upcoming Syfy series is too young and much too small. No disrespect to him tho. It's a cool role for sure.

Amos is one of 4 skeleton crew members of a salvaged (stolen) Martian military vessel, renamed the Rocinante by its new Captain. Amos is primarily the ship's mechanic and quite often supplies brute muscle when needed. He's the Jayne character -if Jayne were likable. A big 'ole teddy bear of a guy who would totally murder his friends' enemies in their sleep if they so much as wished it on an eyelash. Generally amicable, but capable of decisive and remorseless violence at a moment's notice. Also knows his way around a fusion drive.

Amos' coverall still features patches from his gig on the ice-hauler Canterbury, where he first shipped with the Rocinante's other crew members. That's not a grenade in his left hand -it's a bulb of beer. For when you just gotta have a buzz in zero G. The brand is from Baltimore, his hometown. The difference between a surface tool belt and a space tool belt is extra straps, so stuff doesn't go flying everywhere when thrust gravity is inactive. The shotgun shells were Amos' personal modification.
