Why do the German Aces get more diversified equipment, as opposed to the AWOL Allies all being stuck in Big Joes?

Because OPDS is intended to be a living history lesson where players will directly experience the unique personality of military equipment used in WWII, thus reflecting truths about their country of origin.

The diversity of AFVs fielded by Germany in WWII was actually a logistical liability for a number of reasons (which I won't detail here). Germany's tendency to treat the war like a great big military weapons expo was a significant indicator of damning flaws in their overall system. An instance of industrial/technological superiority nearly enabling world domination -which ultimately became of a factor of internal weakness. Rather than conquering the world with unprecedented futuristic tech, Germany seems to have been (at least in part) conquered by it. One in a variety of ways that Germany was drowned by its own 'ambition'.

Also, it makes for cooler bosses to rumble with. Matching baddies to their machines is fun.

Drafting a cast of villains who run the gamut from pure evil to almost-good is another narrative goal.
