The "trippel kanone" and War Hammer are great. The hull cannons and platform machine guns make sense. I can even understand the crotch guns. But how could one justify putting a flamethrower in it's arse?

i had an idea for a Super-heavy 4-legger called "die Nibelungen" kinda like the tarantula from Wild Wild West, only with somewhat more conventional weaponry.

Cool name. You gonna rock it out?
My first thought is that a super heavy ought to have more then 4 legs... but then I just remembered that I've got an unfinished idea for a super heavy V-2 launching Biped... :P

Hey, did you ever see this one by Todd Norton? :iconltla9000311: [link]

Possibly...
But I think the same thing would happen that does with any other new technology debuted in war; eventually the enemy makes their own version, a counter-weapon appears, etc.. and a new brach of the war machine evolutionary tree begins.

IMHO the war would take the same general course, and end with similar results for the same reasons. But afterwards, the cold war would have birthed countless next-gen mechs.

Hey Damien, thanks for dropping by! OPDS is all personal concept stuff so far. But I'd love for it to become a real game eventually. The same way that writers write books they want to read, OPDS is simply a vision of the WWII mech game I'd love to play.

Have had a ton of help from Thomas :iconflaketom: and a few others. Still much more in the works. :D

Cool. Are we talking miniature/table top gaming? Pencil and paper RPG? Computer game? Either one of these I'd love to see a version of. There doesn't seem to be a lot of mech-based computer games out there...

I've never played much tabletop RPG, so that's a tough one to contemplate, but probably the easier to execute. OPDS was most inspired by console games, so that's how I imagine it best. In a nutshell, a cross between Konami's Ring of Red, and Square Enix's Front Mission series. Tho not in their new 3rd person shooter format (kerflop). More team-based tactical RPG w/ a real story and engaging characters. Lots of pilot leveling and mech customization, and combat unit customization as well.

Apart from the story campaign, It'd be cool to have an alternate sim mode where players can pick any side they choose, in different theaters and environments. Possibly online. Team/Co-op, etc...

Agree there ain't a whole lot of Mech games out there. Especially on the next gen consoles. Armored Core 4Answer probably the best IMO. A smattering of the usual Gundam fare... . Steel Batallion, Chrome hounds on Xbox. Nothing w/ a strong narrative.

how to achieve all this I've got no clue. Just enjoying the conceptual/creative challenge at the moment.

There is talk of a 128mm + 75mm combo gun. As per the E-100 and MAUS super heavy tank weapons.
But Mr. Schossleitners (my panzer mechanic/engineer) may be burnt out on this one...

BUT this one is not a true gatling -as the barrels don't actually rotate. Really just three 88s lashed together.
It's a curious thing- you never really see any gatling type weapons in WWII...
There's the civil war models, and then the next big appearance (that I can think of) is the so called mini-gun often mounted on Hueys in Vietnam.

We do have have other OPDS weapons with at least a gatling type resemblance tho. But these are mostly panzerschreck type deals w/ rotating ammo drums.
They'll appear when I show more Axis heavy mechs. ;P

would have been funky nontheless if they rotated! like having that really DOOM DOOM DOOM kind of slow tempo
i thought about such a gatling already. a higher caliber but less speed =) mmmmmh the jackhammer might be the very least example i can make in terms of speed

and yeah you are right they have been some heavy mashine guns out there but the first gatlings came up during vietnam

Rate of fire pretty much limited by the auto-loader mechanism, which is a totally fictional device for this time period, but totally standard on modern tanks.
So the solution in this world for upping Rof seems to be just adding more whole guns. Especially w/ the weapon/arm mech destroyers. Then we can still get some DOOM DOOM DOOM action! :D
OR... think of three 88mms striking a target simultaneously (which a gatling couldn't do). Ouch! More combined striking force than a 128mm, but quicker to reload the next rounds.

Definitely thinking of a jackhammer as melee weapon. Particularly for US mechs, which go a more industrial route, compared to German medieval style hand weapons.

Another thing missing, like gatlings, is shotguns. Typical option for more futuristic mechs. But again not very WWII. I guess the closest equivalent for spread-shot weapons would be flak guns and HE type ammo. 'Splash damage' stuff. God for taking out infantry. Not as as effective vs. heavier armor.

OK, sorry to babble. I like bouncing ideas around. Especially w/ guys who know their military tech.

Grr! Just accidentally deleting everything I wrote!

Yeah, I really wanted an intimidating in-your-face angle for the triple 88. Spent a good deal of time getting just the right angle.
+ Added some 'chromatic aberration' towards the top for dramatic lighting effect.
Another key tweak was darkening the inner thighs so that the crotch MG would pop.
I should send you the original untouched export so you can see exactly what was done...

Beautiful model, Thomas!
Would like to post some extra detail views (already jpegged some new shots based on the latest model). Maybe even show some of the initial rough concepts, since people seem to like it. The ones w/ the double cannons and mortars on back...

Nevermind the battle axe! Just how large is that tri-barreled Gatling...and its firing rate? O_O
Reply
:iconrob-cavanna:
Rob-Cavanna Featured By Owner Jan 8, 2011
Triple 88mm, so the firing range would be roughly equivalent to a Tiger Tank. Altho, w/ slightly shorter barrels, the velocity may be lower, and therefore reduced range? Of course, the rate of fire would be 3x faster! Not truly a gatling, however, as the barrels are fixed and don't rotate. Each has it's own seperate magazine, rather than all the barrels sharing a single ammo feed. Really just 3-honkin' big guns lashed together. Not unlike the smaller quad 20mm we did for the Siegmunde mech arsenal.
