Artist's Comments

Debated whether or not to post this WIP for the Pepper Project. ...What the hell. Might as well see if I can get some comments while they'll still be useful. I'll probably take it down when color is done -or move to scraps.

March 1st deadline!!!! Really is like racing.

Kind of Star-Warsy. Design is rather boxy and dated, but maybe I've got old fashioned taste. Obviously inspired by Wipeout Fusion style racing games. Will be a variety of other race craft zippin' thru the background. Fortunately those are designed already, but not sure whether I'll do them graphic/design style or regular color like foreground craft. Time will tell...

Originally wanted to do a guitar wailin' Space-babe Pepper rockin' out, but was beaten to the punch, so I came up w/ this concept instead. I see one other racing pepper in there so far, but style is quite different. So let let this be a testimony to my new Pepper concept before 50 other deviants submit theirs this final week. ;]

Reposted after some minor tweaks: lengthened legs bellow the knees, smaller torso + fixed some perspective issues on the ship. Lots of thanks to :iconfuchsiart: for sending that anatomical crit in the knick of time! And thanks to everyone else for all the comments so far.

Great concept!!!! :D
the ship's gorgeous and i love the star wars quality about it :D
.. and she's totally Hot!
if you don't mind my only crit would be about her legs .. the thinghs are perfect cause that could be considered in a prospectic view but the calfs...(the part between feet and knees... not sure about the name in english :P ) are a bit too short IMO, but really if you already started coloring her don't mind me at all :D

i can't wait to see her finished :D

getting a cold is quick this time, but fish, fish may take a while
couldnt agree more its real pro work
whats the pepper project anyway ?
:D Thanks very much for the compliments and crit, Alessia! Good call on those short leg areas -missed that. She's on a separate layer from the ship, so easy to fix.

Hmm... Either her right foot needs to drop down a step to make room for growth, or I do something to make it look more foreshortened. Her left knee can move higher and to the right i think. Glad you caught it so soon! Ah, the perils of working too fast...

I've got lofty plans for the background, but we'll see what time allows.

Happy to see that Artgerm finally posted YOUR entry the other day. Congrats! Here's hoping we both get published.
Excellent question, my friend. See here: [link]

i donno how to tell but may be the way you render in smooth shape...
esp the noze look like a soft material...
(personal opinion i don`t know...)
i bet on color vertion it would be done perfect

Thanks for the comment and kind words, Arif.

Interesting observation about the metal texture looking soft. I would guess it's because the lines are mostly hand drawn with a black col-erase pencil, and since some of those lines aren't super-sharp, kind of fuzzy, the whole thing doesn't look as crisp my line art on the harpy mech. No time to use that same technique here. In general, stroking lines digitally is a better way to go for mechanical illustration. Haven't quite mastered that pencil yet, but it is possible to achieve the similar crispness with it.

Will have to pull this together with color. That should help. I left the internal areas mostly blank with that in mind. When using pencil before digital color, you have a couple choices: 1) Use the pencil texture, smudges, scribbles, dirt, etc... to create mid tones that will be integrated w/ color later ala the :iconkeithwormwood: glazing technique. 2) Or minimize all middle values and just use crisp line work to delineate shapes that will be rendered fully in the color stage, like the more classic manga and comic styles. Like so: [link] Hope that makes sense. Here I went for option2, but perhaps without maximum success.

I'm actually a designer by trade, but more of an illustrator at heart. I have my own studio and earn my bread doing mostly product design. But I obviously have other passions, which is why I'm here sharing this more fun sort of work with you lovely folks. :D Did that anwser your question?
