WWII mech size comparison by Rob-Cavanna WWII mech size comparison by Rob-Cavanna
UPDATE 12/20/12: Added Siegfried for Germany, Longshanks and Big Tom for UK.

-----------------------

* * * O P E R A T I O N : D R A G O N S L A Y E R * * * [link]

Side by side line up of several anthro mech concepts for OPDS. Some of these from sketchup/photoshop collabs w/ :iconflaketom: Specifically: Pzf II, Pzf IV, Wotan, and Big Joe.

Sorta rough n' sloppy, but fun for a look. The evolution of the Axis mechs ought to make sense for AFV junkies who appreciate the technological leaps and bounds between a Panzer I and a Tiger tank.

WIP: other anthro mechs in progress didn't make this round, but will add 'em on in the future.

Also Omitted are all the Mech Destroyer concepts. In the vein of Fasolt and Fafnir:

drawing a line between those and the anthros. Ultimately there ought to be enough MDs for their own line up.

So shall I show you the indigenous tanks of the ANZAC forces? ie the tanks of Australia and New Zealand.

Alright!
Here is the Sentinel the first tank to be built with a hull cast as a single piece:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sentinel…
The Cluster of a tank from New Zealand the Schofield: [I mean look at this thing]
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schofiel…
Though for added hilarity New Zealand's first mech would probably be more like their first tank the Bob Semple:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Semp…
This thing was d
esigned and built without formal plans or blueprints, which went about as well as you expect. [If you're wondering the Schofield was the second attempt...I think.]

Wow! Those are all definitely uhhh, quite interesting. For very different reasons. Thank you!

-The Schofield is pretty unique. Reminds me a bit of how the BT-7 was originally designed to run sans tracks. Puts me in mind of an experimental light recon mech that could run on both legs and wheels. Cool, but ultimately impractical?

-The Semple tank is totally hilarious. Indeed it would be fun to design a clunker of a mech w/ corrugated armor. Obviously, using a tractor as the base makes no sense... BUT it's not crazy to say that it might be based on the chassis of an agricultural mech. I mean w/ similar results. But it's not a boring idea.

-Now the Sentinel... that guy is a total winner in my book. Aside from the utterly absurd flacid dick for an MG cover (seriously guys, how were they not laughed out of Australia for this?) it is actually a real beauty, which is no surprise, being based on the Crusader chassis. Basically a prettier version of one of the war's prettiest tanks. I'm working on a Crusader mech right now, and it's not hard to imagine doing a more curvy shaped cast armor AC series version of it. And converting the name 'Sentinel' to a mech equivalent cousin is bound to have good results.

So, I'm checking out the stats on this thing, and I'm starting to feel like it was almost an actual war crime that the Sentinels weren't put into full production! Almost on the same scale of conspiracy as the Heavy Pershings not being made available to American forces in Europe. Are you with me on this? It's like a more heavily armored Crusader, with (from the AC-2 onward) pretty decent armaments. We don't have the benefit of knowing how it would have really performed in the field, but it seems to me that it might actually have been a rather excellent tank. Especially with a goddamn 17 pound gun! Could it have given the Cromwell, Britain's most decent WWII tank, a run for its money? What is your opinion?

Well something interesting about the Schofield is that that you can switch locomotion between wheels and tracks from within the vehicle.
Oh right the Sentinel well from what I can tell the Australian Cruiser tank program was terminated because it was believed the effort should be put forth on building their own railway locomotives and supporting the large number of US tanks due to arrive thanks to lend lease and they were largely equipped with already with British tanks and as I said they were to receive American tanks to further arm them.

I think the Sentinel may have been a superior vehicle. It is absolutely possible that the nature of Australian shipping and heavy industry might have made mass production and deployment of Sentinels impractical, but pound for pound, it could have kicked serious ass. I believe a lot of wartime armor industry decisions were made in back room deals and it all came down to $$$ lining bulging pockets rather than what was best for the fighting men. Because things still work that way.

Taking the tinfoil hat rant further, I think there was also a great deal of ego involved as well. Britain did not like the sound of Australian tanks replacing it's own, even if they were better. Just as American leadership did not want Canadian tanks replacing Shermans. It seems petulant, but it is consistent with how the war was actually fought in terms of infighting and pettiness between both allies and internal military branches. Despite a madman attempting to take over the world, at no point does the top brass refrain from acting childlike.

So, to summarize, I'm mad at the heroic leaders of WWII for being childish, because I want more tank toys to play with!!! Waahhh!!

Hey will there be any Canadian based mechs?
Like ones based on the Ram:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ram_tank
Or maybe the Grizzly:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grizzly_…

Oh and how about ANZAC forces I have a few local tanks from those areas you can base a mech or two on.

So how would they work as mechs in your opinion?

They would look a lot like cast hull version Big Joe... but more so the Grizzly, and w/ better stats. For the Ram, I'd incorporate those nice cast armor curves into the hull piece and make it asymmetrical. And I'd redo the arms to reflect some of that unique turret design. Knees would have some of the geometry of the front track covers. Would make heads unique in some way too. Maybe more British style helmet, or perhaps even a berret. Need to do more research on the Canadian soldier's uniforms as well as fine details of Griz and Ram.

So many versions of the Sherman, the same would go for Big Joe. Perhaps the most versions of any mech in OPDS. Tho by the end of a campaign, you's probably have parts mashed together from all over.

Also, I'd probably have a turretless RAM APC mulitped.

I see that all these mechs are based off of existing tanks what's the Wotan the maus or something? Also what's the Japanese one based off of?

You could say the Wotan is MAUS related. Or possibly even an idea similar to the RATTE P. 1000. There is no perfect 1 to 1 correlation for that one. Really the brainchild of :iconflaketom: But it totally fits into that absurd wonder weapon category that only WWII Germany would dream up.

Japanese mech is easier... that would be the KyuGo (type 95).

Sure. Are there any specific camo patterns you want to see on a specific mech?

Ideally, I'd love to set up some sort of web page where anyone can use all available OPDS parts to design whatever mech they want, and in whatever color/markings they want.
Sort of like a beta version of an in-game mech garage. Even better would be the option of changing backgrounds and taking snapshots.

Heck, I've seen something like that on DA w/ a dress up Hipster girl: [link]
Granted, it's simpler than what I'm thinking, but even a more basic cartoon version could be fun to play with.

That is a glaring omission, I'm aware. I have some in the works, they just weren't complete enough for this round, but I intend to update in the future and add more for all major powers. Even the Swedes and Czechs will get in there a bit. ;)

"Big Tom" (based on the Cromwell) "Longshanks" (from the Churchill tank) and the "Templar" (crusader) will eventually claim their spots in here.
