War Skin Color Study by Rob-Cavanna War Skin Color Study by Rob-Cavanna
Original War Skin concept by Mike Charles :iconmikecharles: from his Knights of the Last Order story: [link]

Line Art: [link]

Flat color study before rendering shadows and highlights. (Eventually destined for scraps).

This is very similar to how I color mechs when playing something like Armored Core. Not sure it's 100% right for KotLO tho ^^;

Which would you pick?

I like H the best. To me, the gray, blue and gold seem the most knight-like.

No worries, Tom.
I've been struggling lately to keep up w/ all my correspondence.

There's no one around here to ask for creative input, so I feel a bit dependent on DA pals for feedback.
Also need to consider that my tastes don't always fly for everyone else.

My fave options can be defined by an "L" shape composed of B, A, and E. Not necessarily in that order, though; I think the two blues are probably my favorites. I'm not sure why, and part of that might just have to do with an aesthetic bias towards blue...But I also think those color schemes lend something to the overall design, or rather compliment it. I think that's it--they seem consistent with the slick stylization of the designs themselves...The closest real-world equivalent I can think of is something like ski boots or even lycra speed-skating outfits! Just that cool (in temperature), slick, streamlined sort of quality I associate with "extreme sports," and which seems consistent with these mech designs. As far as A, I prefer this bluish-gray "off-white" color scheme to the wholly white C. Just feels more subdued, more...I'm not sure how to put it, "classy" almost. Understated. I prefer the color highlights on this one as well (as compared with C), though I'd be curious to see the sword highlights echo some of the highlights on the suit itself rather than being a different color entirely.

So that's it, that's about all I got! As always, I'm sure any of these would render up nicely, but those three are definitely my faves. These are looking great, Rob...I hope that helps!

It really does help, Tom. Thanks for the input. In terms of popular opinion, A & E are tied for most popular options. Personally, was leaning towards C -since it seemed the most sophisticated to me. A might have been my original favorite tho. Something about E strikes me as not right for the main hero's vehicle. Someone said Police-like, which might be it. I'll no doubt use it on another vehicle tho. Good call on the extreme sports equipment comment. I think that's the right vibe. Speed and performance being the emphasis there.

Deciding is particularly tough, because this is one of a series, and I'd like to have some consistency across the board for the 'good guys' War Skins. For example if I used A, then subsequent WSs would have similar metallic base color, but accents like F or H. E could be adapted to this end tho.

Another strong argument for A is that a metallic base color makes sense for the whole Knight theme. It would be great if I could master a finish that has the appeal of a silver sports car like the Nissan GTR [link] or an Aston Martin DBS [link] Maybe getting in over my head tho.

Thanks again for your thoughts, Tom! (The villains are easier!!) :P

Sports cars are definitely a great and oddly under-utilized inspiration for mecha stylization, I think...Murakumo ([link]) and Freedom Formula ([link]) did a pretty good with it. And of course some of Shirow's mecha have a definite "sporty" vibe to them.

Hah, the villains always are!

I never played Murakumo, but was aware it exists (as a somewhat less than spectacular mech combat game). Had no idea tho that there was such pretty concept art floating out there. I LOVE the look of that one. Any chance you have a warm and tasty link saved to more Murakumo mech art?

Freedom Formula -I've seen some related mech art here on DA. It's probably something I want on my radar. I find that style of mech art slips more into the realm of speedpainting. Has less of the specificity and deliberated design that I tend to pursue. But generally the world can never have enough racing mechs. IGPX designs interesting as well.

Did you every catch any Ghost in the Shell animated episodes (stand alone complex or one of the following series) ? -Some loyal Tachikomas meet a sticky end coming to Batou's rescue... only to be reincarnated in virtual form, working as independent AI for a rogue Kusanagi, and notably toting some slick new net-racing colors!! :D It was a truly great moment in the series.

You know, it's hard to find images from that game nowadays, I think because it *did* get such a lackluster reception, but I will send you a few pics from my personal library via e-mail.

IGPX, I KNEW I was forgetting one! *snaps fingers* Yeah, AWESOME mechs in that show, and the animated race/combat scenes were freakin' incredible. I only ever caught part of one episode on TV, which I still have recorded on VHS. :)

I agree with your on the Freedom Formula stuff--you know I share your lack of enthusiasm for speedpainting. I did get the first couple of comics (mainly for the cover images!), but they switched artists halfway through and I completely lost interest.

Hah, Tachikoma racing colors sound perfectly apropos!

Some unsolicited advice: I strongly recommend a netflix subscription. Best way in the world to catch up w/ anime of all sorts, without breaking the bank. I pay about $15-14? clams a month to keep 3 discs at a time. (also I can stream instantly viewable flix to my PS3. But this feature should work even better on a PC. No extra charge). Other plans cost less. Stuff comes in the mail like clockwork. Selection will make you dizzy. Best service for best value ever! Ghost in the Shell galore, gundam, robotech, Bee-bop, whatever you desire... not to mention groovy shit like the latest Terminator I just watched!

Alas, I wasn't able to hang in there w/ the whole IGPX series. Same old silly anime shenanigans. Getting too old maybe. In a world of exceptional drama and dialogue *cough*Inglorious Basterds*cough* some anime is hard to swallow. Still, I was grateful for a taste. And the new approach to mech design/combat was very refreshing. Thanks for the tip on the FF comic. Was close to making a hasty purchase.

The worst part about speedpainting is that I know I have no choice but to make peace w/ it eventually. I know my illustrations will never evolve until I can master a colorful mood-inducing scene without gobbling precious hours. The bright side is that I was able to do the background on that gunship: [link] in about an hour -which is just about right. (My first speedie?) In some cases, you can get saved by having the centerpiece blocking the view of a mediocre background, like I did there.

IMO this amazing person is able to speedpaint stunning mecha illos without sacrfiicing any quality or finesse in the vehicle design department. [link] and [link] Just fan-frickin-tastic. He seems to be the exception tho, in terms of balancing speed, fine art sensibility, and really solid understanding of mecha design.

Oh, and thanks for the e-mail. Finally done downloading, so time to go see.... :eager:

Oh man, I'm totally with you on that guy, Rob...I absolutely love his mech designs, and you're dead right, his renderings are way above mean on the Bell curve of speedpainting concept art in terms of execution. I think it's the fact that he actually defines the distinct masses of forms using highlights, midtones, and shading so that his machines (and other physical artifacts) have an authentic sense of weight and volume. His work is a dramatic and refreshing contrast with the "moody, edgy, atmospheric" slop you see all over the place nowadays. (Wow, *my* bias isn't at all evident here, is it?!)

On top of understanding volume, light, and atmosphere, the guy just has an excellent intuition for how mecha ought to be built... like, full of awesome! I've got my own share of biases in that department. This man seems to have studied and mastered the curriculum. Then mashed it all into a ball and tossed it into a world of beautiful painterly paintings. :worship: The speed never compromises quality of design. There's no swish swish sleight of hand masking idea deficiency w/ clever software techniques.

BTW, I think it'd pretty cool that a bunch of Freedom Formula creator people are here on DA. Did you know there's buzz about Director Brian Singer optioning it? That might be really swell!

The Murakumo/IGPX Mecha tablau was sweet! Thanks very much, Tom!

So many pretty colors!

I like E the most, it's got something of a "police" vibe. Desert Warrior D is also nice, but his sword looks a bit out of place.

Now I want to watch King Arthur and the Knights of Justice again...

Now that you mention it... E does have a very polizia vibe to it. Surprisingly popular too. Feels very retro to me, like a Voltron or Power Rangers style color scheme. -One member of a similarly outfitted group.

Don't know how it's possible, but I've actually never seen that Arthur cartoon! Seems like I woulda liked it. Always loved the film, Excalibur, and also dig the more recent Romanesque retelling w/ Clive Owen, Ray Winstone, and Kiera Knightly.

Thanks for offering your opinion, Emile. Gonna be tough to decide!

May be the best m- I mean, suit of armor win!

It was one of the coolest cartoons back then, complete with awesome armor designs and metal intro. Funnily, it was also (like Transformers, GI Joe, He-man, etc.) made to advertise a line of toys, but I never knew they existed until last year...

So far, A is in the lead, w/ C & G tied for second. A and C are tops for me as well.

While some of these color schemes may not work for Malachi, something similar could work better for other Warskins. I think that B, D, and G in particular might work well for some villain characters, depending what suits them.

*Also, I was thinking it might be cool is there was a degree of uniformity among the Knight's Warskins... so maybe Malachi has something like C, and Daniel goes a similar but slightly different route like E. ...OR Malachi has A and Daniel is like F or H. In other words, similar base colors and detailing, but different accents? KotLO is your baby tho, so these are just my :twocents:

cool. yeah A and C seem to work the best , they give off the hero look pretty well. as for the villains i could see a few scheme working on them. and as for the uniformity tat would work also, but we just have to make sure that the schemes still convey each Knights personalities.

Thanks, Damien! Stance-wise I actually didn't mess w/ the legs much, other than enlarging the feet, and making sure both sides were symmetrical. I did, however, do fairly extensive revisions to the upper torso. Moved the whole shoulder in slightly, modified chest piece, and simplified a lot of extraneous areas that were confusing the hell out of me and not strengthening the design. Simplification was my friend. Overall, I think the balance has benefited, w/out sacrificing the original feel and posture.

Sleep has not been totally terrible. Much worse for me wife. But I've been making it a lot worse for myself by staying up late to work on projects like this! No energy reserves to cope w/ sleepless baby.
Still, if it weren't for that, I usual torture myself by being a night owl anyway.
