The latest design for Operation: Dragon Slayer by :iconflaketom:

The top 2 are my post-edit retouches of his original 3D sketchup concept. Bottom is his latest model WIP based on my revision requests.

Think of an Axis version of the Russian Hind! Trouble. Currently toying with similar ideas dedicated to Pzf transport, mech killer/anti-armor stuka version, heavy cargo, etc...

Since it wasn't my idea, no need to be modest... I love this thing!

----------------------------

Wish the Captain America vehicle concepts were a bit more like this. Don't get me wrong, I think the production design in that film is awesome, but... IMO the technical designs would have done well to be a tad more 1940s-ish, and a little less 2011 movie studio shiny. If that makes any sense. Plenty of room in the weird-waffe realm to be fantastical without seeming too futuristic, which Cap. A was at times. Maybe it's like that Star Wars syndrome of prequel CG shiny, vs. original trilogy grit.

It's the sort of thing Spielberg tends to get right. Like that funky bomber in Raiders. I know that the Red Skull is some kind of genetically enhanced super-genius, and I know that they were drawing a line between his and the 3rd Reich's super weapon projects, but still... a few more visual queues indicative of the era, integrated subtly w/ his war toys would go a long way to enhancing plausibility. Because toy was too often the vibe.

Terrifying is how I would describe a MAUS or a trans-Atlantic bomber. And those things were actually nearly real. Red Skull's gear was usually too movie-fun to ever be really threatening. But real weapons kill -something which ought to invoke an odd mix of respect and disgust. If a design comes off as fundamentally silly, how can it do that? In the end, I lost the carefully cultivated sense of real war built up by the film's very decent drama, and it all veered disproportionately towards comic book frivolity. Executive decision, perhaps.

This from a guy who likes drawing early 40s mechs... well, yeah. I know. They were almost there actually. Like 85%

Since this rant is already full blown, let me break it down:

Lazer guns - no

The super bomber -yes

Cap's bike -yeah

Fighter/Sub -hell yeah! Until the engine cover was off.

Those mini-bomber jawns w/ jet propellers- oh yeah!

Heavy troopers -meh

Red Skull's fancy wheels -sure

armored cars w/ nice SdKfz sharp angles -almost. bad lazers. bad interior.

The wannabe Ratte super tank -absolutely no. And that may be the worst offense.

But hey, it's the best Weird War II film I've ever seen, and it's not a bad one by any means. Just... Rrrr!!!
